For example, the government reassures us that inflation is about 2.5%, but in terms of what people commonly buy, prices rose over the last year far more than 2.5%. On average, wholesale prices of food basics (wheat, corn, oats, etc.) rose by 48%, energy costs (heating oil, gasoline, etc.) by 23%, meat products (beef, pork, etc.) by 39%, and coffee (with sugar) by 36%. Health insurance premiums are projected to rise this year, and family incomes are down. So when the government announces everything is all right because inflation is only 2.5%, remember the figures above and tell them your money isn’t going as far as it used to despite their cheerfulness and reassurances.]
